Songs can say a lot about cultures. I discovered that Lady Gaga's song "Telephone" (lyrics HERE) is very similar to Diana Haddad's "Sheft Ettisalek" (lyrics HERE).
Both songs are by female singers, they are both talking to the "guy" saying that they do not want to answer the phone.
The very interesting distinction I found was the excuse each singer gave for not picking up the phone. Lady Gaga said "I have got no service in the club you say, say." While Diana Haddad said "صحيتني من النوم شللي جرالك" which means "you woke me up from sleep, what happened to you?".
Hmm, we know that westerners like to party in clubs and so on, and that is obvious from the song as well. But, does that mean that Arabs like to sleep? I mean what kind of impression does that give to other people? Isn't it a bad thing to think of Arab women as "asleep" the whole time? Or maybe partying is worse? I don't know.
It's just a thought that crossed my mind while driving this morning to university.

ReplyDeleteNot like partyin and clubs is any better; they're portrayin' women as entertainment for men; hookers, no more no less..
Since bein' lazy is not as bad as bein' a promiscuous sl**, I'd still prefer the Arab version over the Western, anytime! 'Lesser of two evils', innit?;)
